SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide, MTP-131, or Bendavia) is a mitochondria-directed tetrapeptide composed of D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2. Its unique mechanism involves selective binding to cardiolipin, an essential phospholipid located exclusively within the inner mitochondrial membrane. Through stabilization of cardiolipin and its interaction with electron transport chain complexes, SS-31 enhances electron transport efficiency, supports ATP generation, and helps minimize excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
